The Nicolaï family has been active in the fruit sector for decades. Following in the footsteps of his father, Bompa Jo Nicolaï set up his own company in 1963, on the one hand the tree nursery that conducts research into new varieties and on the other hand the fruit production, sales and export department – led by son Peter. On an annual basis, the company handles approximately 10,000 tons of apples and pears.
The official start
Bitten by a passion for fruit, Peter Nicolaï founded his own wholesaler Nicolaï Fruit in 1994 in rural Gorsem in Sint-Truiden. With a team of just a few people, the focus is mainly on the export of top fruit to the Scandinavian countries and the United Kingdom.
Moving time
Nicolaï Fruit continues to grow and the move to larger premises is urgently needed. The team moves towards the industrial estate in Sint-Truiden and the first truck with cooling installation is purchased. The own label Nicobel becomes a well-known name in the sector that is synonymous with quality.
Hard work pays off
Thanks to long-term relationships with suppliers and customers and a constant eye for quality, Nicolaï Fruit also starts to supply retail customers in Belgium. This opens the door to building up even more expertise, starting up new lines and further specializing in the segment.
Quality first
Nicolaï Fruit obtains its first quality certificate with the highest score. Over the years, quality has become the foundation for further growth with current customers and for attracting new ones.
Expansion range
Due to the growing demand from customers, Nicolaï is also becoming a vegetable specialist! This ensures an increasing import from Spain & Italy and allows us to offer a wide product range all year round.
Business is growing!
To continue to guarantee quality in product & service, product specialists from the sector are recruited at Nicolaï. As a result, the team strengthens their expertise and maintains the reliable service that customers rely on. In addition, we also obtain our certification for the trade in organic products.
Further professionalize
With a new logo and numerous other initiatives, Nicolaï Fruit shows that the organization is constantly adapting to the complex and continuously changing sector. The first sustainability report is being drawn up and new digitization projects are being launched.

The family business becomes one member richer when daughter Hannah Nicolaï contributes to the sale and further development of the company. Meanwhile, the export branch is growing in Europe and far beyond to Southeast Asia. Organic growth continues unabated.
Efficiency all around
Managing daily fresh produce is not that easy! For example, since 2019 we rely on SAP Business One to efficiently manage our business processes, which was a crucial milestone to further grow the company. A year later, the integration with QC-One follows, which is the first in Belgium.
The big move
Stimulated by the strong growth in recent years, Nicolaï decides to move to completely new premises in Borgloon, on the Belorta site. With a warehouse area of more than 6,500 m², we leave room for efficient work and further growth.
Ready for the future!
In the meantime, the second generation has come on board and priorities have been further tightened in the context of digitization and automation. With an enthusiastic team that is ready to take on new challenges every day, Nicolaï Fruit & Groenten is ready for the future!
